Okay, so if you are anything like me and your algorithm is overflowing with wine trends, then you have definitely seen the red wine and vanilla ice cream combo.
My first thought: what are we even doing here?
After trying it: seriously, what are we doing here?
My friend Sarah and I gave it a go with two different reds, and honestly, I am not sold. I can imagine someone enjoying it if they are obsessed with ice cream and only add the tiniest splash of wine. But for me, the bitterness of the wine and the sweetness of the ice cream are not friends. The B.C. Cabernet Sauvignon and Spanish Garnacha did not complement the subtle vanilla flavours of the ice cream. For the record, we used 49 Below ice cream and this is not to throw any shade at them, their ice cream is amazing. It just did not vibe with the red wine in this case.
Now, I will give credit where it is due. I think this could work with a dessert wine, or maybe with a different ice cream flavour, or even with a softer, fruit-forward red. If you are curious, it is definitely worth a test run.
But my big takeaway? I like ice cream, sure, but I love wine way more. And this combo made me realize that the two just do not need to hang out in the same bowl.
Would you pour a glass over your dessert, or keep your wine in the glass where it belongs?

I had no idea this was a trend... that sounds wild!
For what it's worth I'd hang out in a bowl with you any day.
