It’s has been absolutely stunning in Victoria lately — I know its not summer yet, but all this sunshine and blue skies means one very important thing: crisp white wine season is in full swing.
I decided to put this blog post out a week early because I tried something new over the weekend. You might’ve seen the jalapeño-in-Sauvignon Blanc trend making the rounds (especially on TikTok), and I have to say: I’m on board. I tested it out, and the light heat from the jalapeño adds just the right amount of kick. Paired with the green, herbaceous edge of Sauvignon Blanc, it creates a refreshing, slightly spicy drink with a nice complexity that keeps you coming back for another sip.
If you're trying it at home, I recommend going with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. They usually bring those bright herbal and citrus notes — think lime, passionfruit, and fresh-cut grass — that complement the jalapeño beautifully.
My go-to right now? Stoneleigh Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It’s vibrant, reliable, and a great value wine at around $20.
Why does this pair well?
Same flavour compounds. Ever notice those “green pepper,” “herbaceous,” or “grassy” notes in Sauvignon Blanc? Jalapeños share some of those same compounds, so the wine doesn’t get overpowered — it actually pops more. It brings out what's already there and adds a layered, fun twist.
Acidity and spice never fails. The crisp acidity of Sauvignon Blanc refreshes your palate after that subtle heat, kind of like a spicy margarita. It’s a combo that just works.
I get it — this is a bit controversial. Why “ruin” a perfectly good wine by adding food to it? But honestly, in the right context — say, a sunny afternoon with friends — it can be a really fun change of pace. The key is to pick a wine that’s high quality but not too precious. Personally, if I’m going to splurge on a bottle, I want to savour every unique note as-is. That’s why I chose something I know and love, but have had enough times that I don’t mind switching it up.
Okay, here’s how to try it:
-
Pour yourself a glass of chilled Sauvignon Blanc
-
Add 2–3 thin slices of jalapeño (keep the seeds if you want more spice)
-
Swirl it around or let it sit for 5–10 minutes to infuse
Some people freeze the jalapeños first — personally, I don’t think that’s necessary.
What to pair it with?
This is such a fun drink to share with friends, so I’d suggest a casual spread: think charcuterie with goat cheese, ceviche, or even something tropical like mango salsa. Light, fresh, and flavourful is the vibe.
Are you going to give this trend a go?
